Red Dragon
For Dinah

The cannon’s boom like thunder as they fire across the sky
I place my hands around my ears just praying I won’t die
Bullets whizzing past me as I move across the land
My only defence is this gun that’s in my hand

Onwards to Mametz we go, and the shelter of the trees
Still praying that a sniper won’t bring me to my knees
By God we must be winning now, the fights been so intense
Although the loss of I life I see, does not make any sense

Way too late I see above me, the devil in disguise
Red Dragon tries to shield us and save our soldier’s lives
She wraps her wings around us breathing fire onto fire
Her tail, thrashing out behind us, higher, moving higher

The shell that hit has left us here, with no grave to call our own
The years, the seeds and now the trees have seen us all re-grown
Proudly standing there above us, Red dragon is our light
She will guard us always and watch over us at night

Mametz…Mametz… the missing soldiers of Mametz
